Could the MMR vaccine harm my baby if I am pregnant?
Here’s my story. I started my job at a childcare facility within a hospital on 6/11. I was required to have an MMR booster, which I recieved on 6/13. I was warned by the doctor not to become preggers for 30 days. Not a problem, right? Well, I ended up getting strep throat from my precious lil’ students within my first week, so I started Amoxicillin on 6/18. I knew that antibiotics can affect birth control, so my boyfriend and I used condoms for the rest of the month. On 6/28, our condom broke….did I mention that I may be the luckiest girl on earth So now I have the double whammy of not only possibly being pregnant, but all of the research I have done indicates that if I am pregnant, there could be some risk to my baby due to the MMR vaccine. I was due to start my period today (7/2), but so far no it hasn’t shown it’s bloody little self. What could happen to my baby as a result of the vaccine if I am pregnant, and what is the likelihood of problems?
Hi, just wanted to reassure you because the other answers are quite negative.
I am in a similar situation but by my dates I was actually pregnant when I received the MMR. I panicked straight away but went straight to my doctor. He spoke to a specialist at the hospital and apparently they advise against MMR because it is a live virus – it contains a very weak form of rubella. Because they know that catching rubella when you are pregnant almost certainly does cause defects, there is a ‘theoretical’ risk that the vaccine could be harmful. However, this is only a theoretical risk and there is absolutely no evidence that a woman who received MMR when pregnant will have a baby with a defect. In fact – there are no recorded cases in any study of the MMR vaccine damaging an unborn baby.
Hope this reassures you, it certainly did me. I am now 11 weeks pregnant and looking forward to the birth of my hopefully very healthy baby in January.
MMR Vaccine help?? Should I get it,or not?
On the information leaflet it says you should delay/not get it if you have a low immune system,or a disease which affects the immune system. And if you have gotten it twice before,it’s still advised to get it again.
But I’m in a predicament…..I have Juvenile Arthritis,a type of Rheumatoid, and this causes me to have a very low immune system, and the meds I’m on affects my immune system also. Because of this,I pick up things realli easily. I’ve had the vaccine twice already, but I was talking to someone who’s nephew got the vaccine twice and he still got a severe case of the mumps.
Any doctors/nurses/medical people out there?? Or anyone who could help?? What do ye think I should do?? Should I get the vaccine, regardless of my comprimised immune system??
I don’t want to get the mumps…..I get realli sick with a cold or the ‘flu,I’ve had the ‘flu for the past 3 weeks,on my second course of antibiotics and it has now developed into a chest infection…..
Thanks in advance
Yeah…..I did get it twice as I mentioned in my question,if you actually read it…..and people ask lots of random questions in the Ireland section, what does this have to do with travel in Ireland:
Yeah. Not much.
And I was just looking for help, thank you very much. Obviously you think I’m THICK enough to say ‘Oh,I’m gonna do exactly what such and such a person said’ I just wanted opinions…..
The MMR vaccine often causes arthritis in females who are past puberty . It would be a shame for you to get a different kind of arthritis in addition to JRA, or to increase your existing symptoms.
Read the package insert I linked to above. You won’t believe your eyes when you read that the vaccine manufacturer admits what I have told you.
ALTERNATIVE VACCINE SCHEDULE VS. GROUP B STREP POSITIVE!!! PLEASE HELP!!!! PARENTS OF KIDS W/ AUTISM!!!?
Alright… where do I start……
I’ma first time mom.. im 19 and my baby is due in 3 weeks…. I just got the Group B Strep culture done… (you know, they test for strep in the uterus) and tested positive. I know I am being a little paranoid because the chances of the baby getting extremely sick are rare, but it can still happen and im a brand new parent!….
The problem isn’t necessarily that I don’t know how to prevent my baby from being born sick. My doctors already plan to give me antibiotics while im in labor so that it will hopefully block the strep from being passed to the baby.
My issue is that I have a brother with autism, and a lot of my family members have autistic traits. Therefore, with my baby, I plan to start right away with gluten/casein free foods, and an alternative vaccine schedule…. now this Strep thing is kind of changing certain things I had planned. For instance, i didn’t plan on letting the baby get the MMR vaccine, however a late sign of the strep infection in children is developing Rubella, so NOW what!? Also, strep can turn your breast milk sour. Therefore, I wouldn’t be able to breastfeed. But how do I tell if my milk is sour?
I know these are all questions my doctor could answer, but I have a lousy midwife for this delivery and shes really batty…. i mean, kind of off-her-rocker batty, and she never really answers my questions. Also, physicians encourage you to push every single vaccine and other thing they can possibly push on you (Parents trying to fight autism, you know this) so i already know what physicians will tell me.
MOTHERS OUT THERE, IF YOU HAVE TESTED POSITIVE FOR GROUP B STREP (GBS) WHETHER YOUR CHILD WAS SICK OR NOT, WHETHER YOU BATTLE AUTISM WITH YOUR CHILD OR NOT, WHETHER YOU HAD ALTERNATIVE METHODS OF CARING FOR YOUR CHILD OR NOT, OR IF YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT WHAT TO DO/WHAT NOT TO DO, WHAT IS SAFE AND WHAT I SHOULDNT RISK….. PLEASE TELL ME ANYTHING YOU KNOW
****** PLEASE LET ME ADD ONE THING, ON ACCOUNT OF MY FIRST TWO ANSWERS…..
IF YOU DONT AGREE WITH THE DECISIONS I MAKE TO RAISE MY CHILD, THATS FINE. EVERY ONE IS ENTITLED TO THEIR OPINION. BUT I JOINED THIS BOARD FOR HELP AND SUPPORT, NOT TO BE BASHED AND TOLD HOW TO RAISE MY CHILD
FIRST OF ALL, I UNDERSTAND YOU DONT WANT YOUR KIDS CATCHING THESE DISEASES, NONE OF US DO, AND THATS WHY YOU CHOOSE TO VACCINATE. BUT THERE ARE SAFE WAYS TO VACCINATE OUR KIDS WITHOUT PUMPING A TON OF SHIT INTO THEM AT ONCE *NOTE I SAID I HAD AN ALTERNATIVE** SCHEDULE, NOT THAT I WAS GOING TO AVOID VACCINATION COMPLETELY. CONSIDER, ALSO, THAT DOCTORS WILL PUSH UP TO 6 SHOTS PER VISIT! AND NONE OF THESE SHOTS ARE TESTED FOR COMBINATION RISKS!
** SECOND, SOME OF U WHO ANSWERED HAD NOTHING AT ALL TO SAY ABOUT MY MAIN CONCERN, THE STREP, AND HOW IT WILL AFFECT MY CHILD. GOOD JOB.
SO, IF YOU HAVE NOTHING POSITIVE, HELPFUL, OR KNOWLEDGABLE TO COMMENT ON THIS TOPIC, PLEASE DONT COMMENT AT ALL. THANK YOU
**************** DAMNIT! ***************
AGAIN, PEOPLE, MY CONCERN IS NOT LINKING VACCINES TO AUTISM, APPARANTLY WE ALL HAVE OUR OWN OPINION ABOUT THAT. MY CONCERN IS GBS! ***GROUP. B. STREP.*** CAN WE PLEASE FOCUS ON THAT??????!!!!!!!!!!!!
Group B strep does NOT turn breast milk sour. Also, rubella has nothing to do with group B strep. Approximately 25% (1 in 4) pregnant women test positive for group B strep. So this is nothing strange or out of the ordinary. Http://www.cdc.gov/groupbstrep/general/gen_public_faq.htm
From the above link:
“Women who are group B strep positive can breastfeed safely. There are many benefits for both the mother and child.”
“About 25% of pregnant women carry group B strep”
Gluten and casein do not cause autism. Eliminating them from the diet is a treatment once a child gets autism. But if you want your child to avoid gluten and casein anyway, that’s fine. They are not required for a healthy diet.
Regardless of what you decide, gluten and casein should not be an issue until you introduce solid foods at 6 months or later. Breastmilk should be the only food for the first 6 months.
If you are concerned at all about autism, I would suggest that you not give any vaccines at all, until there is a study done comparing the rate of autism in vaccinated vs. Never vaccinated kids. The government refuses to fund such a study, but here’s a clue of what they might find: http://homefirst.com/info-1/vaccine-choice/autism-and-the-homefirst-practice.html Virtually no autism in never vaccinated kids, and significantly lower rates of other diseases such as asthma.
If you don’t want your baby to get the hepatitis B vaccine at the hospital, you need to communicate that clearly and often to the nurses and doctors while you are there. And it’s best to not let your baby out of your sight, because nurses sometimes forget and give the vaccine out of habit.
Not vaccinating my kids at all is one of the best decisions I’ve made for them.
how often do adults get MMR vaccination during their life?
I work in medical field, in routing check up, blood work showed I have no protection against Hepatitis B and mumps. Are MMR split into 3 different vaccine now? Because I had my measles shot about 10 years ago. I don’t think I can decline it. And, isn’t Hepatitis B vaccine given in 3-4 shots? I had a flu vaccine 10 days ago, and, immediately after, got sick, not flu but very bad cold/bronchitis, I just finished by antibiotics. How long should I wait until my immune system is back to normal to receive these vaccines? Thanks
I am not exposed to patients
so again, how often is MMR given? and someone loose immunity if taken 10 years ago?
so I re-submit blood?
Which country are you in?
It’s not given as a single vaccine. I think you might be confused.
The measles component is included in the MMR. You’ll need to demonstrate immunity. Simply have it again. Same goes for HepB. It’s given as three separate shots.
The cold was unconnected to the influenza vaccine. You cannot get a viral infection from the shot. Do remember there are many viruses circulating this time of the year.
And you don’t need to wait any length of time before having the shots, they are fine to have now.
Edit: The MMR lasts decades to a lifetime. You wouldn’t normally be given it again in adulthood. School leavers are given the booster vaccine. When were you born? Those born between 1980 and 1990 may not have received a mumps vaccine, and those born between 1970 and 1979 may only have had a measles vaccine. In this case, you’ll need the MMR.
MMR…a couple of questions im stuck on…?
im doing a few questions and there quite difficult, cant find the answers on the Internet…
1. The vaccine uses a live non-virulent strain of the virus. how is such a strain of the virus produced?
2. which chemical is released by white blood cells to destroy viruses?
3. why would an antibiotic not be effective against measles?
thanks to anyone who can answer it im sooo stuck.
Anti-biotics are only effective against bacterial infections, viral infections will not get destroyed by them- im uessing measles is a virus. White blood cells dont really work that way, they adapt their own structure to bond to a foreign cell (bacteria or virus) by doing this they envelope the cell and kill it. Thats a very non-scientific description. They produce non-virulent strains through chemical manipulation and also by just finding natural variations. Smallpox for example was vaccinated against by giving people cowpox a similar but non-fatal virus
